Answer engine optimization for small businesses
Answer engine optimization (AEO) makes your business easy for AI assistants and AI search features to find, understand and cite. SunliftAI does it in five workstreams: crawl access, answer-first pages, consistent business facts, accurate structured data and checking how assistants answer your customers' questions. AI-ready structure is built into every SunliftAI website, and ongoing AEO is part of the Shine plan at $99 a month.
What AEO is, and what it isn't.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Google, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude for a recommendation, the assistant pulls from pages it can find and trust, then summarizes them. AEO is the work of being one of those pages. It isn't a submission form, a markup trick or a guarantee. Google says pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode under the same indexing rules as regular search, with no special files or schema required. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude search the web with their own crawlers. So good AEO is good SEO with a sharper focus: specific answers, unambiguous facts and proof that other sources agree.
What SunliftAI does: five workstreams.
Access. Every page is served as readable HTML, not just JavaScript. robots.txt welcomes Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Applebot, and sitemaps are submitted to Google and Bing.
Answers. Pages are built around the questions your customers actually ask, in plain language, with quotable specifics: prices, service areas, hours and turnaround times.
Business facts. One version of your name, location, phone, hours and services across your site and its structured data.
Structured data. Accurate schema.org markup (Organization, Service, FAQPage, VideoObject and more) that matches what visitors see. We never mark up content that isn't on the page.
Testing. We check how answer engines describe your business and close the gaps we find.
What no one can promise.
No one controls what an AI assistant says. Answers change with wording, location and the day you ask. We don't guarantee mentions, citations or rankings, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What we promise is the work above, done carefully, and an honest record of what we observe.
How we measure AI visibility.
Three numbers, kept separate so estimates are never mistaken for results:
- Mention and citation rate: how often your business appears across a fixed set of questions on each assistant, asked the same way each time.
- AI referrals: visits and leads from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai in your analytics.
- Search performance: Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in Search Console's overall search data.

AEO questions
What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants and AI search features to find, understand and cite. It means publishing clear, specific answers to the questions customers ask, keeping business facts consistent across the web, making pages crawlable and fast, and adding accurate structured data. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO aims to rank pages that people click in search results. AEO aims to have your business chosen and quoted inside an answer, from Google's AI Overviews to ChatGPT or Perplexity. The foundations overlap: crawlable, indexed, trustworthy pages. AEO adds weight on direct question-and-answer content, unambiguous business facts, third-party mentions and checking whether assistants actually mention you.
What's the difference between AEO and GEO?
The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. AEO (answer engine optimization) usually refers to being the direct answer to a question, including voice and AI answers. GEO (generative engine optimization) usually refers to being cited or recommended in responses from generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. In practice, the same work serves both.
SEO, AEO or GEO: which one does my business need?
All three, built in order. SEO is the foundation, because AI features and assistants rely on pages that are crawlable and indexed. AEO and GEO add answer-first content, consistent business facts and third-party mentions that make your business easy to quote. For a small local business, that is one combined plan rather than three separate services.
Will AEO replace SEO?
No. Google says pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode under the same indexing and eligibility rules as regular search, with no additional requirements. AI assistants also depend on search indexes and crawlable pages. AEO changes what good content looks like, with clearer answers and stronger proof, but it doesn't remove the need for technical SEO and a well-indexed site.
What is an llms.txt file, and do I need one?
An llms.txt file is a proposed plain-text summary at a site's root that points AI tools to its most important pages. It is optional and not an official standard, and Google says its Search systems don't use it. It costs little to maintain, so SunliftAI includes one, but the real work is clear, crawlable pages that answer customer questions.
Does schema markup matter for AI search?
It helps, but it isn't a switch. Structured data labels facts such as your services, prices, location and FAQs so machines can parse them reliably, and Microsoft has said schema helps its systems understand content. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features. Treat markup as reinforcement for clear visible content, never a substitute, and keep it accurate.
Can a small business really get mentioned in AI answers?
Yes, especially for specific local questions where big brands have little to say, such as who offers a particular service in a particular town. Answers tend to draw on sources that state specifics clearly and are consistent across the web. A small business with a clear website, a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews and a few local press or directory mentions can compete there.
How long does it take to see AEO results?
Technical fixes such as crawl access and structured data can be picked up as soon as pages are recrawled, often within days to weeks. Being mentioned in AI answers usually takes longer, because it depends on content depth, reviews and third-party mentions that build over months. Results also vary by platform and by how questions are worded, so measure with a fixed set of test questions.
How do I measure whether AI search is sending me customers?
Combine three views. In analytics, track referral visits from AI tools such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, and the leads they produce. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic within Search Console's overall search performance data. And each month, ask a fixed list of customer questions on each assistant and record whether you are mentioned or cited.
Can I do AEO myself, or do I need professional help?
You can start yourself: complete your Google Business Profile, keep your details consistent everywhere, add a clear FAQ that answers real customer questions and make sure your site isn't blocking search crawlers. Professional help pays off for the technical layer, structured data, content at scale and ongoing testing. SunliftAI builds AI-ready structure into every site and includes ongoing AEO in the Shine plan.
Who offers AEO services for small businesses?
Many AEO and GEO providers are agencies built for mid-size and enterprise brands, often without public pricing. For a local business, look for someone who will fix crawlability and structured data, write answer-first pages, build consistent local listings and test AI answers regularly. SunliftAI includes AEO in its $99-a-month Shine plan, with no contract, for small businesses nationwide.
Can I control how my content appears in AI answers?
Partly. In Google, the same controls as regular search apply, including nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Separate robots.txt tokens let you allow search crawlers while declining AI training, for example allowing OAI-SearchBot but blocking GPTBot, or using Google-Extended to limit Gemini training and grounding. Blocking a provider's search crawler usually removes you from that assistant's answers.
How do I get my business into Perplexity answers?
Perplexity searches the web in real time and cites its sources. Allow its PerplexityBot crawler in robots.txt, make sure key pages load as readable HTML, and publish specific answers with facts that are easy to quote, such as prices, service areas and turnaround times. Mentions on reputable third-party sites help too. Test your core questions monthly and note which sources it cites.
